L'Origine des Espèces consists of two main components: a photographic image on the wall representing an old fashioned typewriter, and a soundtrack played through 48 floor-mounted speakers. The image and the soundtrack were both generated from a single computer file. First, a digital photograph was taken of the typewriter. Then the digital file was used as a source for printing the picture and generating the soundtrack: the same code was translated two different ways, visually and aurally, yielding two different representations of the same digital reality.
